FAQ

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about the event.

How much does it cost to take part in Klausen Monument?

The event is free of charge and open to all cycling fans. Registration is required, however.
If you enjoy the event, we would be grateful for your financial support. It helps to secure the event for the long term.

Why do I need to register if it's free?

Yes, the event is free – where else do you get that these days? Nevertheless, we need your registration so that we know how many participants will come. This allows us to ensure the event runs smoothly together with our partners (e.g. SBB) and helpers. There are also legal and official requirements that we meet with your registration and consent. Last but not least, it lets us communicate with you directly and keep you up to date about the event. Don't worry – we won't spam you, and your contact details will not be passed on to third parties for annoying sponsoring purposes.

When is the best time to start?

That depends entirely on your pace and your plans. At an average speed of around 10 km/h, the climb from Linthal takes about 2 hours without breaks. Starting from Unterschächen at around 10 km/h, you will reach the pass in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Just allow enough time for a relaxed stop at one of the many restaurants along the route.

Is there a start time and timing?

The event is not a race! There is no fixed start time and no individual timing. Every participant can choose freely when to set off between 10:00 and 16:00 and enjoy the car-free pass road. From 16:00 the road is open to motor traffic again.

Can I change my start location after registering?

Yes, no problem. On Sunday, 12 September 2027 you can start in Linthal or in Unterschächen, whichever suits you better. We only ask for your start location at registration to help our planning, for example for refreshments, helpers and public transport. Your registration is valid for both sides.

Taking it easy is nice and all, but I want the KOM*!

There is no official timing at Klausen Monument. It is meant to be a cycling festival for everyone who enjoys a car-free pass road. The local restaurants are also happy if you take it easy and stop by for food and drink. You don't care? You want the KOM? We get it – we want it too now and then, at least in theory. Give it a try: the best time from Linthal is 57:17 min, held by Patrick Schelling. If you are going all out, look out for the Strava segment "Klausenpass from cobbles". But please pay even more attention to the people around you and the other cyclists on the pass. Be considerate, no shortcuts. Always expect oncoming traffic!

* KOM = King of the Mountain. On the popular cycling app STRAVA, it stands for the fastest time on a climb.

Can I take part with an e-bike or mountain bike?

Of course, all cycling fans can take part. Whether on a road bike, e-bike, mountain bike or city bike, the event is open to everyone. There are even participants on roller skis and recumbents.

Are there e-bike charging points?

Along the route and at the top of the pass there are several e-bike charging points provided by the local restaurants.

What happens if the weather is bad?

As the saying goes: "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing." The event will take place even if the weather is not ideal. However, as the top of the pass is at 1,948 m above sea level, we reserve the right to cancel the event in unreasonable weather conditions (heavy rain, snowfall, etc.). Any announcements will be made on our website and social media channels.

Are there refreshment stations?

There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the route. Local businesses look forward to your visit – and to make sure your bottle is full for the climb, we will provide a bottle refill station at both start locations and on the Urnerboden.

Is there enough room on public transport?

We are in constant contact with SBB. Train capacity will be increased as much as possible on event day. Nevertheless, some trains may be full on the way there and back. Even if it gets a bit cosy in the carriages, humour and patience help in such moments.
‍
Travelling with your bike by PostBus to the start in Unterschächen is not possible, however. Due to limited capacity, bikes cannot be taken on the PostBus that day. We therefore recommend starting the climb by bike from Altdorf. But note: the road is only closed to motor traffic from Unterschächen. Please be considerate of other road users and ride carefully.

What is the situation on the Axenstrasse?

On event day, the cycling ban on the Axenstrasse between Brunnen and Sisikon is expected to be lifted from 07:00 to 21:00.

Why Klausen Monument?

The Klausen Monument association is run by dedicated cycling enthusiasts who also organised the local edition of Ride the Alps in 2021. With the withdrawal of Ochsner Sport as main sponsor, the association has taken matters into its own hands and established an event that benefits everyone: cycling fans with a closed pass road they can ride for free, the local businesses that are involved, the tourism regions and carefully selected sponsors that suit the character of the event. We care about the joy of cycling, a connection with nature, regional roots and refreshing communication.

How are you funded?

As an association, we are funded by contributions from foundations and patrons, donations from participants and selected sponsorships. With these contributions, and with a lot of passion and time, we organise an event for all cycling fans – one that is free for participants and actively involves local businesses.

How can I help?

Support is always welcome, especially for an event of this size! You are welcome to sign up as a volunteer before or during the event. Or do you like the format? Then we would be delighted to receive your donation, so that we can establish the event for the long term.

What happens with my donation?

With your donation you make a key contribution to the existence of the Klausen Monument association. Thanks to your support, we can finance costs such as infrastructure, logistics, permits, road closures, fire brigade, police, first aid, marketing and staff – costs that arise every year and must be covered for the event to continue in this format.
